HOW I MAKE A POSTER...

DAY ONE: SKETCHES!!

the Deadline is always tight... the first thing i do is come up with a concept, this is crucial, this is the most important part, this determines how i will draw the subject matter. Without a concept its just another pretty picture that anyone can make, the concept is what makes it endure, makes it mine...

1) Concept: This takes several days of sketching, because to get to the final poster idea, sometimes i have to reject my own ideas untill i end up the the strongest possible image for the poster. It is not always what you see that is the hard part, its what you don't see.

SKETCHES: Here is how this project developed. I get inspired and create a lot of sketches, then i have to submit the best ones.

I ACTUALLY DREW ANOTHER 5 OR 6 SKETCHES AS WELL, IMAGES OF CRUCIFIED ROBOTS..... IMAGES OF CAVEMEN ROBOTS.... IMAGES OF FOSSILIZED ROBOTS UNDER THE GROUND......

BUT, I WAS NOT ABLE TO FIND ALL THE SKETCHES WHEN I CLEANED UP MY MESSY STUDIO..

SKETCHES. (GROUP 1)

In this first group of sketches, I wanted to explore the synthesis of man as machine, man as tool, man becoming a victim of his own tools.

SKETCH 1 shows a giant machine dominating the landscape, with eyes on each gear. The rotating gear of progress always watching you, making sure you are doing your work. At the bottom there are small people buried as if under the ground, each one hooked up to a pipeline that is either sucking their life to feed the machine, or the machine's wastes are coming down to feed them.

SKETCH 1a and 1b further explore this idea, developing the concept of the machine into a city or a temple where we worship our tools as they control our lives. I also played around with more dynamic perspectives.. and made the TOOL font like the symbol for Infinity, adding more solidity to the concept of an imposing "big brother" machine.

SKETCHES. (GROUP 2 )

In this second group of sketches, I wanted to again explore the synthesis of man and machine, man as a junkie who needs to get his technology fix.

SKETCH 2 shows a man jacking in, along his arms are tracks from previous jacks.. the name of the band would be on his shirt...

SKETCH 3 trys to simplify this concept further by just showing the arm, which finally got up the courage to unplug itslef from whatever machine it was addicted to , but in so doing, it killed itself..

SKETCHES. numbers 4

In this third group of sketches, again i continue to come up with a defintition of man and tool...

SKETCH4 shows a lonely figure with his head slumped down in the corner, the fact that he has no identity, his face is hidden, and the "big empty space" between him and the letteing reinforces the feeling of isolation. Across his head are scars of different types of computer jacks and ports, where machines can plug into his consciousness at will. Behind him i drew some quick shading lines, someone suggested it looked like grass growing over him... I liked that idea and also did some other sketches of fossilized tools underground...(not shown here)

SKETCH 4a again, same concept, a lonely figure in the corner , scarred by the technology he created.

SKETCHES. Number 5 (these are very rough "mental notes" so i don't forget, i think i drew these on gum wrappers in traffic)

In this group of sketches, I wanted to simplify the concept into very graphic elements, i played with the words TOOL and 2001, because they were both very similar....200L.

Obviously these are very loose sketches, just to get the ideas down...

SKETCH 5 I wanted this to be like a playing card, to repeat the information so that the poster could be flipped either way. the concept was that one hand hold a bone, the other would be a skeleton hand holding a tool...the date and the band name would work in both directions...

SKETCH 5a is the same idea, except a robot holds a bone, a hand hold s a tool, again, the combination of man and machine...

SKETCHES. TOOL / 2001 CAVEMEN

Here i wanted to be so clever, the words 2001 also spell TOOL (200L), on the famous monolith from the movie "2001". Here mankind is still using their tools as weapone, In this case, caveman throwing computers, showing we are still barbaric, we just have more sophisticted sticks and stones in the modern age, but we still use them the same, as weapons.

SKETCHES. TOOL FINAL CONCEPT

I liked the concept of man's evolution with tools, but since Tool was playing in Berlin, i also wanted a very bold industrial and propaganda feel. So, I just made a giant tool-man.. and that was it. Below him i put the evolution of man, from a nut to a bolt, from the screw to the gear, "man" is just a step in the evolution of the tool..

Now, since i had wasted so much time on sketches, I had to jump right into the thick of it, no time to waste.
