HOW TO MAKE A POSTER-the first steps..

1) first off, i get a phone call asking me for a poster, the deadline is always tight...after a quick sketch is approved, i hand- ink the final artwork.. using black india ink and a very small brush, i draw it to scale (meaning i draw the art the same size as the poster, usually 20" x 30") on a white illustration board.

2)..next i shoot the finished black and white drawing onto a piece of large film, sort of like a xerox onto clear plastic..over this "clear positive" i place a sheet of "rubylith" film, and i cut away everything i do not want to be that color, in this photo i am working on her hair, so i cut away everything i do not want to be hair color...

3) Here are a few of the individual handcut layers of rubylith.. each sheet represents a color of ink that will be printed, each sheet is handcut by me and has to fit together perfectly...(this particular poster was 7 colors, so that was a lot of ruby to cut, and the stuff aint cheap, and it causes blindness and arthritis too...later, all the different sheets of rubytlith are put onto a silkscreen press, and if i print 200 posters, then 200 prints are all run one color at a time..with just the "hair layer", when that drys, the same paper is then run through printing just the skin layer, etc. etc. untill the image comes together, one color layer printed on top of the next, each one has to fit exactly to make the poster...a lot of skill and craftsmanship go into making a limited edition fine art silkscreen, using special thick inks and metallic colors on a heavy paper for only $40 a poster, so get one before they sell out..

.This is what my studio looks like in the aftermath of a ruby cutting frenzy, little strips of red static cling that stick to everything, your shoes, they get in your car, and you still find them a week later in your underwear....

HERE ARE THE COLOR LAYERS...

1) First I print the background layer (dark purple)

2) now i print the skin over the background, light blue over dark purple

3) third comes red, which is printed over the blue over the purple

4) fourth comes yellow, which was printed over the red over the blue over the purple...

5) fifth gets the gold layer, nice and shiney bright..

over the yellow, over the red, over the blue, over the purple...

6) Last goes black, which makes all the pieces seem to fit together......
